The course examines the problems confronting organisms in their habitat and introduces the concept of population ecology. It also covers the soil as an ecosystem and addresses the critical issues of pollutants and the effect of pollution on the environment, vegetation, and animal life.

This practical course provides you with the basic knowledge and skills for equipment upkeep. It starts with the concept of maintenance and repairs for both science and electronic equipment. You will learn to identify electronic components and know their specifications, master essential soldering techniques, and understand circuit layout on a chassis. A key focus of the course is on developing practical skills in troubleshooting and fault isolation in various types of science and electronic equipment.

This course provides a broad knowledge of the chemistry of living systems. The curriculum begins with the organization of the living cell and its topochemistry, emphasizing the importance of water and the concepts of pH and buffers. It then moves into a detailed study of macromolecules, starting with the properties, sources, uses, and structure of carbohydrates, including the specific reactions of monosaccharides and the structure and uses of disaccharides and polysaccharides. You will also explore the nature, biological, and industrial importance of lipids. The course covers proteins in-depth, including their structure, properties, and function, the classification of amino acids, and the overall structure and behavior of proteins. Finally, it covers the nature of enzymes, vitamins, and minerals found in the living cell.

STC 221- Organic Chemistry II-Harmattan 25/26
ND 2 - Second Semester

This is a continuation of Organic Chemistry I, designed to extend your knowledge to other functional groups and concepts. The course covers the chemistry of ethers and amines before moving into a detailed study of aromatic compounds. You will learn about the chemical reactions of benzene, including the mechanisms for electrophilic and nucleophilic substitution. The curriculum then covers the chemistry of phenol, carbonyl-substituted benzene, benzoic acid and its derivatives like benzamides and phthalic anhydride, and finally, the chemistry of aniline, diazonium compounds, and azo-dyes.

Solutions and reagents; solvents and their application; storage, extraction, dispensing, recovery; Basic sampling techniques; physical and disposal of chemicals in the laboratory; chemical principles in separation; collection, handling and preservation of biological lab specimens; setting up and management of tropical aquarium and animal house and preparation of herbarium.

Basic concept in genetics; rudiments of mendelian genetics; concept of dominance and deviations from mendelian genetics; sex determination and sex linkage; mechanism of variation and sex linkage; mechanism of variation and mutation and basic concept in genetic engineering.
